About Derrick Ibbott

Furniture Design

Since my childhood, I have wanted to work with wood. At 13 I got a Saturday job with a cabinet maker, where I learned the fundamental skills of furniture making. I then followed a City and Guilds course in furniture making and worked for a succession of local furniture makers and restorers, building up my skills and moving on to finer techniques.

In 2000 I opened my own workshop, aged 22, and have been working on private commissions ever since. I’ve deliberately kept my business small so I can continue to work hands-on and make the pieces I want to make.

In 2010, I was awarded a Bespoke Guild Mark by the Worshipful Company of Furniture Makers for my piece Symphony No 1. Subsequently, I also won the coveted Claxton Stevens award, which is given to the best maker who has been awarded a Guild Mark in that year.
